Find a LawyerThe idea of finding a lawyer can be overwhelming in itself. The word “attorney” sounds so monumental, but the truth is that hiring a lawyer is like any other business transaction designed to protect your interests. Once you get past the initial hesitation, sometimes hiring a lawyer can be the best decision you'll ever make.
When finding a lawyer, there are various avenues you can follow. Some people immediately recall the name of a favored attorney, someone that a friend or family member had employed in a time of need. Your friend or relative may have commented on the seamlessness of the trial, the amicable nature of the attorney, or the friendly staff at the law office. Referrals are a great way to find a lawyer.
If you haven't heard about any lawyers in your area, you can consult your phonebook. Find the list of lawyers specializing in the field of law in which you need an attorney. Don't simply twirl your finger around, close your eyes, and point at the first lawyer your finger finds. Make some calls. If you have to leave messages, see who returns your calls without long delays. Find out which lawyer can see you in a reasonable time frame. You want a lawyer who has time to handle your case.
When finding a lawyer, you will notice that many lawyers offer free consultations. Take advantage of this benefit. Meet the attorney. See if he seems the best fit for your individual needs and if you feel comfortable with him. Make sure you make a list of questions to take along so you will not have to leave any questions about fees or your case unanswered.
Finding a lawyer shouldn't be a frightening thing, but it should be viewed as an important decision and should be treated in that way. Don't simply opt for the first name you encounter. Take time to do your research, get to know the attorney, and make sure he will have your best interests in mind.
